Community guidelines

Version 1 · A draft our lawyer is still checking

Stackapella is a place to learn to sing, and singing in front of others takes nerve. These guidelines keep it kind and safe. They apply to everything you share or type: harmonies, titles, handles, names, bios, templates, messages, coaching feedback and ratings.

Be kind

  • Encourage people. Feedback should say what went well first, then one thing to try.
  • No harassment, bullying, threats or hate, about anyone, for any reason.
  • No sexual content, and nothing that puts a child at risk, ever.

Share only what's yours to share

  • A shared harmony must be your own singing or playing, made in the app, or a recording the people on it agreed to share.
  • No recordings of other people's music, and no copies of commercial tracks. Our library is public domain songs and our own arrangements, so you never need them. See the copyright policy.
  • Don't share other people's private details, such as an address, phone number or email.
  • When you make a template, only use a song you have the right to use.

Be who you are

  • Don't pretend to be someone else, a coach you aren't, or Stackapella. Handles like "stackapella", "admin", "support" or "official", and look-alikes of them, are refused.
  • No offensive names or handles.
  • One account per person. Don't make extra accounts to get around a limit, a trial or a suspension.

No spam, no scams

  • No advertising, chain messages or repeated posts.
  • Links aren't allowed in titles, handles and other text you type, for now.
  • No scams, phishing or fake offers.
  • Storage is for your own recordings. Don't use it to host other files.

Coaching

  • Payments stay in the app. Don't ask a coach or a singer to pay another way for coaching found through Stackapella. Messages that do are flagged, and the singer sees a warning.
  • Ratings must be honest, and only from the person who paid. No rating yourself, and no rating swaps.
  • Coaches don't diagnose or treat. If singing hurts, stop and see a professional.

Play fair

  • Don't try to break or overload the app, get around its limits, or copy the song library out of it.
  • No stolen cards, and no testing cards on our checkout.

New accounts start with lower limits on things like sharing, which rise by themselves as you sing. If you reach a limit, the app tells you when you can try again.

Reporting a problem

  • A shared harmony: every shared page has a Report button, and you don't need an account to use it. Choose the reason and tell us briefly what's wrong.
  • In coaching: use "Report a problem" on the coaching, or report a message. You can also block the other person.
  • Anything else: Contact us in the app, or [email protected].

We review every report. When reports from 3 different people come in for one shared page, it's hidden until we've looked at it. Reports about your own content don't count. Some text is held for a check before it appears, for example when it matches words used in spam or abuse.

What we do

Depending on what happened, we may:

  • hide or remove the content;
  • warn you, with a notice in the app;
  • lower your account's limits for a while;
  • suspend your account (you're signed out, and what you've shared is hidden, but your data is kept);
  • close your account, and block it from coming back.

An account whose shared harmonies are taken down for copyright three times may lose sharing, or be closed (see the copyright policy).

You'll know why, and you can ask us to look again

Whenever we hide or remove something of yours, or limit or suspend your account, you get a notice saying what we did, why, under which rule, and whether it was automatic. It's in the app, and emailed to you if you're suspended and can't sign in.

If you think we got it wrong, use Ask for a review on the notice, within 6 months. A person (Hillel or an Editor) looks at it and answers. If we change our mind, we undo what we can: the harmony comes back, or the account is unsuspended.
